Melting ice tempts companies to extract resources from the Arctic — Quartz

May 23, 2021 The first successful oil drilling expedition in the Arctic nearly began in outright failure. In the summer of 1944, US Navy engineers called Seabees sailed for Alaska to find oil. The trip was tough from the beginning storms and ice-laden waters threatened their boats, sank a patrol plane, and threw men overboard. After the Seabees landed in August, the supply ships left quickly, to avoid being iced in. In the winter, temperatures dropped to nearly -50 degrees Celsius, and blizzards raged over their settlement. The indigenous Alaskans living in the area predicted, as a book about the expedition recalls: “The big Seabee would bury the little ones, and then the Eskimos (sic) would bury the big Seabee.”

That compares with 0.11% growth in the fourth quarter.

NAFAS program helps Lebanon s creatives take up arts residences in France

DUBAI: A new initiative is helping 100 artists, designers, and cultural researchers residing in Lebanon take up residencies in France. In the spirit of the proverb “A friend in need is a friend indeed,” it’s a move that reflects the strength of French-Lebanese cultural ties in the aftermath of the deadly Aug. 4 explosion last year and the prolonged economic crisis. Lasting between one week and three months, the residency program – named NAFAS (Arabic for ‘breath’) – has been organized by the Institut français, Institut français du Liban and the Association des Centres culturels de rencontre (ACCR), which has facilitated a number of residences for foreign artists during the past 15 years for France’s Ministry of Culture.

Saudi banks and building materials favored by Daman Investments

RIYADH: Saudi banks and building materials are among the top regional recovery play stocks picked by Daman Investments. The Dubai-based asset manager sees such companies as Yanbu Cement and Saudi Ceramics as benefiting from a pickup in construction activity. The Shareek privatization program is expected to drive lending growth for some of the Kingdom’s biggest banks, Ali El Adou, head of asset management at Daman Investments, told Bloomberg TV on Sunday. The recovering economy may also benefit fuel retailers Aldrees and bookstore Jarir as the reopening of schools mean more books sales and fuel being consumed from schools runs.
